Replacement Upvc Window Handles
The majority of replacement windows handles made of upvc come with everything you require. However the handle you had previously was held in place with pins or screws they’ll need to be removed. Remove the’snap-in’ covers at the base of the handle.
The next step is to identify what type of window lock and handle you’re replacing. This is crucial!
Espag
Espag handles are a type of multipoint locks that are suitable for casement windows such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that fits into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned, it triggers a series of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also known as shootbolts, provide more security than the single point lock found on older window frames.
They are available in a range of different designs, including inline and cranked handle designs that can be used in left or right-hand operation. You can also find ergonomic handles that enhance the appearance and feel of your window, as well as handles.
You’ll need to measure the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle in order to purchase the right replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and can assist you in finding the ideal uPVC handle for your home.
It is possible to remove any screw covers which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if this is the case, use a screwdriver to remove these or pliers to take out the pins holding the handle. After taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle together, you can disassemble the handle.
When you have the handle removed, you’ll be in a position to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the window. You can then remove the wedge block for cockspur which is attached to the handle to allow the window to open. The new uPVC window handles you’ve purchased should be able to fit onto the cockspur wedge block and then into the spindle of the handle which will allow the window to be opened again. The ideal solution is to replace window handle the wedge block cockspur with a new one whenever you replace your uPVC handle to ensure it is properly secured.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle rotates and closes onto the receiver, which is a wedge-shaped plastic catch (not to be confused with timber window latches which are also handled in this section). These handles can be lockable or non-lockable. They are available in a range of different nose heights to fit the existing frame.
The handle is secured by a small triangle-shaped spur (spur) that is attached to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, however the deadlock that locks can be added to give additional security.
Like the Espag handles, the replacement handles for cockspur handle are simple to put in place all you need is new screws (supplied) and the correct backset. The backset is the distance that runs from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many other variations though so it is important to measure before purchasing the handle (see video below for how).
The spindle, Replacement Upvc Window Handles or in certain cases the entire handle is removed by unwinding the handle. The new handle will then be screwed in place using the help of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screws can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish to match the existing hardware, and there is the option of a locking version that self-locks.
This cockspur handle is easy to install and is ideal for replacing or repairing old uPVC Windows. They are an universal design, making them suitable for all backsets and profiles. Each handle has three packers, each with a different thickness. They are installed on the underside of handles and can be stacked to create backsets as small as 9mm or as large 21mm. The handles are available in left and right-handed models, as well as lockable and nonlockable versions. They are also available in a variety nose heights.
Turn and tilt
The premium European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for a long time, but it’s just now beginning to gain popularity in the Americas. The windows are a combination of three window styles – tilt, in-swing and pivot. They are perfect for older homes as they offer more airflow than conventional windows.
When closed tilt and turn windows close like the normal fixed window. By turning the handle 90@ or 180@, based on the tilt-and-turn type of window the sash will slide inwards and the window tilts inwards to allow for air circulation. This is a great solution for ventilation without the need to open a large window which could pose a safety danger if not properly secured when opening.
If the handle is turned 90or 180 degrees the sash will be fully opened like doors. This allows complete air circulation, which is particularly useful in rooms that are chilly or houses where smoke and other odors can accumulate. This allows you to easily clean the outside of the glass by doing it from inside your home. This is a task which often requires precarious steps.
Tilt-and-turn windows are also very secure. They are difficult to open if locked in the closed position. They also have double seals which stop rainwater from entering your home when it is in the tilted position or swing. This is a helpful feature for older homes where burglars are more likely to target traditional windows that are opened using the side hinges.
Spade
There are many kinds of window handles that can be fitted to upvc double glazed windows. There are two types of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other choices include tilt and turn handles, blade or spade handles as well as monkey tail handles and other styles. The type of handle you choose will depend on the style you prefer and the kind of windows you have.
You need to know the way your current handle is connected to the frame to select the appropriate replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing. It is an essential piece of information, especially when purchasing online since some handle variations don’t fit all windows. For instance, some handles for cockspurs are angled, while others are straight and will either turn left or right. You’ll also require the spindle size that is the distance between the base of handle and the handle’s head.
Knowing whether or not your windows require a restrictor is also crucial when selecting the right handle. They are usually employed in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, however they are not required for domestic homes. It is also important to consider the step height, which is the distance between the screw plate and the apex of handle.
The word spade originates from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada and has been translated into many languages including German spaten and Low German spathen. In the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to mock black people. Since then spade has become a symbol of African American pride and heritage.
It is crucial to select the correct size when replacing a handle made of Cadenza. Handles are available in straight and angled versions that differ by just a few microns. The handle head is available in a variety shapes, including a T or D shape. It can also be left with handles.
